What are chemical peels and how do they work?

The technique involves the application of a chemical solution to the surface of the skin to produce the careful removal of its outer layers. The amount of skin removed will depend on the type of chemical used, the strength of this product and how long it is left on the skin.

At The avenue hair and skin we offer 5 types of skin chemical peels. Each one is specifically formulated to help different skin complaints.

TCA 35% Peel (Trichloroacetic Acid)

A TCA 35% peel (Trichloroacetic Acid) is a type of chemical peel that can provide many benefits for the skin. This is our most powerful chemical peel as it's a medium depth peel which goes to the deeper layers of the skin but with less irritation at the time of the procedure compared to other chemical peels. TCA Peels are less light sensitive so are perfect to have all year around. You can have a TCA Peel on any parts of the body but the most popular are the face, neck and chest. Some of the most notable benefits include:
-Improved texture: TCA chemical peels help to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells. This can lead to smoother, more even skin texture.
-Reduced fine lines and wrinkles: By promoting collagen production, chemical peels can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face.
-Lightened hyperpigmentation: TCA chemical peels can help to fade dark spots and other forms of hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage, pregnancy, or acne.
-Reduced acne: TCA chemical peels can help to unclog pores and reduce the appearance of acne.
-Brighter complexion: With the removal of dead skin cells, the skin may appear brighter and more radiant. The modified formula of acids stimulates the process of biosynthesis, promotes skin renewal and regeneration.

Glycolic Acid Skin Peel

Typically, an anti-ageing treatment to brighten dull skin. Glycolic skin peels are also used for acne scaring as Glycolic Acid has one of the lowest molecular weights out of all the acid peels we have to offer. It penetrates the skin to the deeper layer than other acid peels which causes the skin to regenerate, as the skin is regenerating collagen is produced which plumps the skin removing fine lines and wrinkles.

Lactic Acid Skin Peel

Lactic acid is gentler than Glycolic chemical peels. Unlike a glycolic acid peel or a salicylic acid peel, a lactic acid peel is extra gentle and good for even the most sensitive skin.
Lactic acid peels have many benefits for the skin. They exfoliate the surface of the skin, while deep cleaning the pores. They stimulate natural collagen production, even out the skin tone, help to treat rosacea, improve hyper pigmentation of the skin, and will fade dark spots. They can brighten and lighten the skin, and improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Lactic acid peels can help to improve acne and dry up oily skin. A lactic acid peel will also remove dead skin cells, toxins, and debris that are on the skin. They will help the skin to maintain the ideal PH level.

Salicylic Acid Skin Peel

Salicylic peels work great for sun damaged skin, dull, lifeless skin, sensitive skin, dry or dehydrated skin, acne or scarred skin and uneven skin tones. In particular the salicylic acid works within follicles to help clear congestion and has antibacterial properties which helps skin that is prone to breakouts or excess oil.

Mandelic Acid Skin Peel

Mandelic skin peels are great for treating hyperpigmentation and brightening dull or tired-looking skin. Mandelic peels tend to have larger molecules meaning they are less irritating to skin, while remaining effective for treating and brightening damaged skin. We look at Mandelic peels as starter peels for people who haven’t tried a acid skin peel before, it can also be used by people who don’t have any specific skin complaint but just want to enjoy a glowing dewy complexion.
